Mentor already has its share of family-owned restaurants and neighborhood bistros, so opening a new Italian spot means setting yourself apart pretty quickly. After visiting Danny G’s during its soft opening, it already feels like this family-run restaurant has a real chance to do exactly that.
We visited on a Saturday evening during the restaurant’s soft opening, which is usually when you expect a few hiccups, a little confusion, and maybe a long wait. Instead, Danny G’s felt surprisingly polished from the moment we walked in. The dining room was busy, nearly every table was filled, and yet our reservation was ready the second we arrived.

First Impressions
The dining room is on the smaller side, which actually works in Danny G’s favor. It feels intimate rather than cramped, with black tablecloths and simple décor that give the space a slightly upscale feel without being stuffy.
Even with the restaurant packed, the service never felt rushed or overwhelmed. That’s probably the biggest surprise of the night. Soft openings can sometimes feel like organized chaos, but Danny G’s handled the crowd with confidence.
Our table was waiting for us, drinks came quickly, and the staff kept everything moving smoothly throughout the meal.
When the weather warms up, Danny G’s plans to open their large outdoor patio, which will likely make this place even more popular during the summer.

Drinks and Starters
We started with a Long Island Iced Tea, a beer, and water. Danny G’s also offers a full bar and an extensive wine list, which makes it easy to pair dinner with a glass of red or keep things casual with a cocktail.
Before we even looked too closely at the menu, a basket of fresh-baked bread arrived at the table alongside herb-seasoned olive oil and homemade garlic butter.
That bread alone set the tone for the meal.
Warm, soft, and clearly baked in-house, it was the kind of bread you tell yourself not to fill up on… and then immediately do anyway.
What We Ordered
The regular menu is fairly extensive, and there was also a separate specials menu for the evening.
We started with the Italian wedding soup and house salads.
The Italian wedding soup was fresh, flavorful, and tasted homemade in the best possible way. It had that rich, comforting flavor you want on a cool Ohio evening.
The house salad was simple but fresh, and the homemade dressing made a difference. Danny G’s also offers Caesar salads, also served with house-made dressing.
For dinner, we ordered:
- Chicken Parmigiana with spaghetti
- Eggplant Parmigiana with spaghetti
- Baked ziti with meatballs
The chicken parmigiana was exactly what you want from a classic Italian entrée: a generous portion of crispy chicken, plenty of marinara, melted cheese, and a side of spaghetti that could almost be a meal on its own.
The eggplant parmigiana was equally impressive. Even if you usually default to chicken, this version is worth ordering. The eggplant was tender without being soggy, and the balance of sauce and cheese was spot on.
Another standout of the night was the baked ziti with meatballs.
It was everything you want from a baked ziti—hearty, cheesy, and packed with rich marinara flavor, with the addition of meatballs that made it even more filling. The pasta was cooked just right, and the portion size made it easy to share or take home leftovers.

Save Room for Dessert
By the time dinner was over, we were already full, but passing on dessert would have been a mistake.
We ordered the tiramisu along with a special raspberry ricotta toast.
The tiramisu was exactly what you hope for: light, creamy, and not overly sweet, with enough espresso flavor to keep it from feeling heavy.
The real standout, though, was the raspberry ricotta toast special.
Topped with creamy ricotta and fresh raspberries on toasted bread, it somehow managed to feel both rich and refreshing at the same time. It was one of those desserts that everyone at the table keeps reaching back for “just one more bite” of until suddenly it’s gone.
If Danny G’s keeps rotating specials like this, it is absolutely worth asking what desserts are available before you skip straight to the check.

What Stood Out
The biggest thing Danny G’s gets right is that it feels personal.
You can tell this is a family-owned restaurant. The portions are generous, the menu leans into classic Italian comfort food, and there’s a sense that the people running the restaurant genuinely want guests to leave happy.
In a city with no shortage of restaurants, Danny G’s already feels like it deserves a spot near the top of the list.
The portions are large enough that many people will probably end up taking leftovers home, which makes the $$ price point feel more than fair.
Honestly, Danny G’s serves the kind of classic Italian comfort food that feels homemade in the best possible way.
Practical Tips Before You Go
- Make a reservation, especially for Friday or Saturday evenings. The dining room is small and tables filled quickly.
- If you visit once the weather warms up, ask for patio seating.
- Don’t skip the bread service. It’s simple, but it’s one of the best parts of the meal.
- Take a look across the menu before ordering—the baked ziti with meatballs ended up being one of the most satisfying dishes we tried.
- Come hungry. Portion sizes are generous.
- If you enjoy wine with dinner, take advantage of the wine list.
Final Thoughts
Danny G’s soft opening already felt more polished than many restaurants months after opening day.
The service was smooth, the dining room was inviting, and the food delivered exactly what you want from a neighborhood Italian restaurant: comforting, generous, and memorable.
Whether you’re looking for a casual family dinner or an easy date-night spot in Mentor, Danny G’s is absolutely worth adding to your list.
Just make sure you reserve a table first.
