Daytona Beach Day Trip: A Birthday Surprise

My day started early in Cleveland, where I boarded a 7:30 a.m. flight with one very important mission: surprise my daughter for her birthday. Winter was definitely still holding on in Ohio. Before we could even leave the gate, the plane had to be deiced, a familiar ritual for anyone who’s flown out of Cleveland in the colder months. Watching the trucks spray the wings while snow dusted the tarmac made the idea of Florida sunshine feel even sweeter.

Transcript: Plane de-icing at Cleveland International Airport. No spoken dialogue. Ambient crowd noise only.

Not long after takeoff, the gray skies disappeared beneath the clouds, and a couple of hours later I landed in Orlando right around 10 a.m. The warmth hit me the moment I stepped outside the airport which was such a contrast from the chilly morning I had just left behind.

After grabbing my rental car, I set off toward Daytona, excitement building with every mile. Palm trees replaced bare winter branches, and the air carried that unmistakable Florida feeling of sunshine and salt.

But the best part was still ahead.

When I finally arrived and surprised my daughter, her reaction made every mile of the trip worth it. There’s nothing quite like the joy of pulling off a birthday surprise like that.

After surprising my daughter, we headed toward the beach to celebrate in the most unexpected way, a private glow-in-the-dark splatter paint session at Splatzz. The room was lit with black lights, and neon paint glowed everywhere you looked. Music played in the background while we threw paint, laughed, and completely embraced the chaos of it all. It wasn’t about creating perfect art. It was about the experience, the laughter, the bright colors flying through the air, and the joy of celebrating together in such a fun, carefree way.

By the end of the session we were covered in glowing paint and still laughing, the kind of laughter that only comes from doing something completely out of the ordinary. It was messy, creative, and the perfect way to kick off her birthday celebration.

After cleaning up, we made our way down to the harbor for dinner at the Chart House. The setting felt like the perfect contrast to the neon chaos we had just left behind. Boats gently rocked in the marina, the water reflected the evening lights, and the salty breeze coming off the harbor made everything feel calm and relaxed. We sat down to dinner overlooking the water, talking about the day and soaking in the moment.

Just that morning I had been watching them de-ice my plane in a cold Cleveland winter, and now I was sitting by the harbor in Florida celebrating my daughter’s birthday. It was one of those days that reminds you how special simple moments can be, especially when they’re shared with the people you love.
